Matthew Buckingham, Mill Creek Valley, 2005
Digital C-print; 18.5 x 25.5 inches
Edition of 100 signed and numbered. Courtesy of the artist and Murray Guy Gallery

A diptych consisting of two almost simultaneous photographs taken from a car traveling through the St. Louis, Missouri neighborhood known as Mill Creek Valley. Formerly a vibrant African-American community—home to the likes of Scott Joplin and Josephine Baker— Mill Creek Valley was deemed “blighted” in the 1940s and by the end of the next decade had been razed, in part to make room for the expansion of a local highway. In the lower photograph, the camera’s focus is on the utopian contours of the 1950s car, built at the time of the evictions. In the upper photograph, the focus is on the devastated landscape of this once lively area of St. Louis. (This subtle shift is hard to see at this size of image.
