Cabinet is a publisher and cultural organization based in Brooklyn, New York. Its parent organization, Immaterial Incorporated, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit founded in 1999.

By operating with the most expansive and inclusive definition of “culture” possible, Cabinet aims to encourage radical curiosity about the world we have made and inhabit. We believe that curiosity is a fundamentally ethical and political force in that its interrogation of our inherited historical, social, and cultural formations encourages us both to be better custodians of our world and to imagine it otherwise.

Although our core activity is the production of Cabinet magazine, we also publish books and organize exhibitions, conferences, lectures, and screenings. In late 2008, Cabinet opened its own event and exhibition space in the Gowanus area of Brooklyn to promote further public dialogue that both draws on and informs ideas presented in the magazine. Cabinet also organizes events in Berlin, Germany, where it has an additional office.
