Cabinet National Library Needs Volunteers!

Since 2003, Cabinetlandia, located a few miles east of Deming, New Mexico, has been home to the Cabinet National Library designed by San Francisco's Rebar Group (more about the library here and here). The sun, floods, and a recent looting have all conspired to turn the library into a ruin.

The Library must be rebuilt! The rebuilt library will house, as before, every issue of Cabinet and all our books. Its solar-powered lights will allow visitors to read Cabinet by night. It will be a unique site that will attract an estimated 50 visitors a year.

To make this dream come true, Cabinet needs some brave volunteers to join Rebar's Matthew Passmore, John Bela, and Jed Olson, and friends in order to help rebuild the Library:

Where: Deming, New Mexico
When:
July 3-5. You can join for an hour or for all three days.

If you happen to live close to Deming, be passing through the area on Highway 10, or simply enjoy being part of a historical land art project, please come help. The entire project will be documented and presented in the pages of Cabinet. In addition to acknowledging your help in the magazine, Cabinet will pay for your meals and drinks while you are in Deming.

If you are interested and have questions, please call Cabinet at 718 222 8434 or email Rebar at matt [at] rebargroup [dot] org.

The library soon after its completion in 2003.
