Hasse Persson, Say Cheese, Larry, 1980. At the time this photograph was taken, Larry Hagman’s character, J. R. Ewing, on the television series Dallas epitomized the sense of entitlement and cock-suredness that came to characterize Reagan-era America. Dallas, more than any other show, symbolically brought an end to the anxieties and insecurities that had been the hallmark of 1970s America.
